Hazel, age 81, had been suffering for the past two years with the onset of age-related osteoarthritis.
She had pain in her right hip when she was standing up and sitting down - and then getting up from sitting down was quite an ordeal. Hazel’s husband was diagnosed with dementia two years previously and as such she needed to be mobile and be able to drive about.
Hazel eventually went to her GP and was referred to Mount Vernon Hospital. She saw Mr Vedi who said a hip replacement would be the best solution for her pain.
Hazel said, “The NHS had a six months waiting list, so I decided to raid my piggy bank, go privately and pay for my own treatment.”
Hazel had surgery at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital in September 2019, staying for three nights and afterwards had little or no pain.
She said, “Two weeks after surgery, I was showing off to my friends just how easily I could now get up and down from chairs.”
Hazel began her recovery with physio encouraging her to walk and move up and down stairs. Hazel started with a walker, moving swiftly to two crutches and then the one crutch. Within four weeks, Hazel could move around crutch free.
Hazel said “I don’t take pain too easily and I had been putting off the inevitable – but after I had the surgery, I wish I had done it earlier. I now feel on cloud nine and so much happier as a person. I’m now considering having my left hip done to keep up with my right!”
Hazel concludes, ”Mr Vedi has a quiet nature and was very reassuring. He is kind, charming and caring, treating me as a patient and not as an elderly person. Mr Vedi spoke to my husband who has a health condition with understanding and encouragement. I would happily go back to Mr Vedi if I decide to have surgery on my left hip.”
